The Department of Biology in the College of Arts & Sciences at American University invites
applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Biotechnology at the rank of Assistant
Professor beginning August 1, 2027. The ideal candidate is a collaborative scientist with an
internationally recognized or emerging research program that leverages biotechnology to address important questions in biology, medicine, health, agriculture, or related fields. Areas of
expertise may include, but are not limited to, synthetic biology, genome engineering, computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, or other biotechnology-related disciplines. Candidates with experience in technology translation, entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, or intellectual property development are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to develop partnerships with biotechnology companies, government laboratories, hospitals, nonprofit organizations or other regional institutions that create experiential learning, internship, and collaborative research opportunities for students.

This individual will complement the Biology department’s strengths and establish synergies with other departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. Applicants should have demonstrated effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates with mentorship experience, and those able to work with a variety of students are preferred. Responsibilities will consist of building or maintaining a nationally and internationally recognized research program, developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring undergraduate and graduate student researchers, and participating in department, college, and university service.

The successful candidate will occupy lab space in the university’s new Hall of Science, a state-of-the-art facility that houses the Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Neuroscience departments. The successful candidate will join a collaborative department with strengths spanning molecular biology, cell biology, virology, genetics, neuroscience, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. They will have opportunities to develop interdisciplinary collaborations across the College of Arts & Sciences and with institutions throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area, including NIH, NSF, DoD, FDA, the Smithsonian, research hospitals, nonprofit organizations, biotechnology companies, and neighboring research universities.

The annual salary range is $100,000-111,000. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 1, 2027. Full review of applications will begin October 16, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled, subject to on-going budgetary approval. Please submit
