The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children's health research outside North America. The Vision and Eyes Group UCL is offering an exciting opportunity to an experienced postdoctoral epidemiologist / data scientist to join us to undertake a novel and ambitious multidisciplinary project aiming to improve the health, educational and social outcomes of childhood vision impairment. The project comprises investigation of the long-term outcomes using two internationally unique datasets: national cohorts of children and young people newly diagnosed with vision impairment or blindness in the UK, British Childhood Vision Impairment Study (BCVIS) and British Childhood Vision Impairment Study 2 (BCVIS2), ascertained through primary clinical data collection and bespoke individual record linkage to the National Pupil Dataset (NPD) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data. This is an opportunity for an experienced epidemiologist or data scientist to undertake high impact novel research, run a multi-disciplinary research project and develop specialist expertise and experience within an internationally leading Vision and Eyes research group. The post is funded by a research grant from the Medical Research Foundation. The successful candidate will be based within the Vision and Eyes Group UCL in the Population, Policy and Practice Research and Teaching Department GOS ICH UCL. The post-holder will be expected to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, to liaise and work collaboratively, to lead or contribute to publications and to present the results of their work at study meetings, and at national or international scientific meetings, as appropriate. This post is funded 28 months (Grade 7) or 26 months (grade 8), with a probationary period of 9 months). The post is available immediately; the start date is negotiable but no later than 1st February 2027. The salary offered in this role is either £46,261 – £52,586 per annum (grade 7) or £56,431 per annum (grade 8), depending on skills and experience. Interviews will be on 12th or 19th October.

Applicants must have a PhD in Epidemiology, Health Informatics or Applied Data Science, and an a high level of relevant postdoctoral research experience in applied health research, good experience of data analysis of large, complex healthcare datasets alongside experience of writing papers for peer-reviewed journals. It is essential that candidates have a strong working knowledge of research methods in epidemiology and/ or data science and have strong statistical analytic skills. Candidates must have a specific interest in and ideally some prior experience of vision and eyes research
