Research Assistant in Environmental Physiology
About this role
Research Assistant in Environmental Physiology
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Division of Environmental Physiology at Karolinska Institute conducts internationally recognized research on how environmental and occupational stressors, including altered ambient pressure, acceleration, and temperature variation affect physiological function in healthy humans.
The position combines hands-on technical work, preparation and maintenance of experimental equipment, and support for human physiological studies. You will contribute to ensuring that equipment and experimental facilities are safe, functional and ready for research activities.
The position is full-time and based at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet. The work will primarily be conducted in the Division's laboratories at Campus Solna, with occasional field-based experimental studies.
Key responsibilities
- Preparing, testing and maintaining equipment for human experimental studies.
- Operating the Division's hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers and long-arm centrifuge in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
- Assisting with human experimental studies, including physiological measurements and monitoring of experimental equipment.
- Maintaining regular inventories of laboratory supplies, equipment and consumables.
- Monitoring stock levels and coordinating the ordering, receipt and appropriate storage of consumables, spare parts and other equipment required for laboratory and experimental activities.
- Ensuring that essential materials, equipment and supplies are available and ready for planned experiments.
- Developing, maintaining and periodically reviewing risk assessments related to laboratory equipment and infrastructure.
- Developing, reviewing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions and other technical documentation to ensure that procedures are clearly documented, current and fit for purpose.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of technical procedures, equipment and laboratory workflows.
Your profile
We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated practical experience relevant to laboratory, technical or human experimental research.
Required qualifications
The ideal candidate should have:
- A relevant university degree in engineering, biomedical sciences, biology, medical sciences, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience preparing, operating, maintaining or troubleshooting laboratory, technical or experimental equipment.
- Demonstrated experience supporting experimental studies involving human participants and/or physiological measurements.
- Experience following SOPs and safety procedures in a laboratory, clinical or technical environment.
- Hands-on experience with sensors, data acquisition systems, instrumentation or other experimental measurement systems.
- Fluency in spoken and written Swedish and English.
Experience with operating pressure chambers (hypobaric and/or hyperbaric) and long-arm human centrifuges or other specialised environmental physiology equipment is advantageous but not essential as training will be provided. The successful candidate must, however, demonstrate the technical aptitude and willingness to learn to operate complex equipment.
