Shape the future of Genomic Health at unprecedented scale

Mount Sinai, located in New York City, NY is seeking exceptional Assistant or Associate Professor tenure-track faculty candidates to lead ambitious data-driven genomic research programs at the interface of genomics, AI/ML/computer science, and medicine in the Institute for Genomic Health (IGH) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Genomic health has arrived. Genomics- and AI-enabled analysis of millions of sequenced genomes linked to real-world clinical data is transforming how we predict, prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Mount Sinai is one of the few places in the world where that transformation is happening inside a health system, at population scale, in highly diverse patient communities. IGH, led by Founding Director Professor Eimear Kenny, sits at the center of this effort.

  • The Mount Sinai Million Health Discoveries Program: launched in 2022 in partnership with the Regeneron Genetics Center, this landmark initiative is sequencing the genomes of one million racially and ethnically diverse Mount Sinai patients linked to their electronic health records, making it one of the largest and most diverse health-system-based sequencing efforts in the world.
  • The BioMe Biobank: a pioneering EHR-linked germline DNA repository of more than 70,000 Mount Sinai patients, generating genomic discoveries since 2007.
  • A state-of-the-art high-performance computing and AI ecosystem: purpose-built for genomic-scale machine learning.
  • Genomic, multi-omic, and disease/EHR data: through leadership roles in major NIH-funded consortia, including eMERGE, PRIMED, CSER, TOPMed, GSP, PAGE, CAAPA, the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC), and the NIH All of Us Research Program.

    You will be embedded in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team of data scientists, clinician-scientists, genetic counselors, health system researchers, and disease-area experts who share a single goal: translating large-scale genomic data into new paradigms for human health.

    Current arenas of IGH research include mining deep genomic databases with machine learning and AI; basic and discovery science spanning population and statistical genetics, variant interpretation, structural variation, host genomics of infectious disease, and the genetics of complex and psychiatric traits; accelerating clinical genomic and polygenic risk prediction; running clinical trials that integrate genomic information and novel technology into routine care; and advancing health equity by building the resources, knowledge, and best practices needed to bring genomic medicine to diverse and underserved populations.

    The Role

    The successful candidate will develop an independent, innovative research program that leverages large-scale genomic and/or multi-omic, and clinical data to improve human health. Research programs may span, but are not limited to:

    • Population and statistical genetics
    • Computational, machine-learning, and AI approaches for genomics and/or EHR mining, including foundation models for biology and medicine
    • Monogenic disorders and complex diseases
    • Genomic and polygenic risk prediction for preventive health
    • Translating genomic discoveries into novel therapies
    • Implementation of genomic medicine in health systems and diverse populations

      Faculty recruits will hold a primary appointment in IGH and a secondary appointment in a related Department, such as the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences, Department of AI and Human Health, or the Department of Medicine (all consistently ranked among the top departments nationally for NIH funding). Tenure-track candidates are expected to obtain independent funding to grow and sustain their research program, and will receive the institutional support and mentorship to do so.

      Qualifications

      • PhD in statistical genetics, population genetics, computer science, applied mathematics, computational biology, machine learning, or another relevant quantitative discipline; MD or MD/PhD candidates with computational training are strongly encouraged to apply
      • Advanced training in computational genomics, genomic research, and/or genomic medicine
      • A track record of innovation in a biomedical application, evidenced by a strong publication record
      • Enthusiasm for team science in a collaborative, mission-driven environment
