PhD student in Medical Science – Neuroscience, with a Focus on Stroke Care Organisation and Improved Diagnostics and Clinical Workflow in Acute Ischaemic Stroke.
The PhD project will be carried out within the field of neuroscience. The research group is led by Associate Professor Teresa Ullberg and conducts clinical research focusing on stroke, with particular emphasis on acute ischaemic stroke, diagnostics, and the organisation of stroke care. The group has a close and well-established collaboration with the Lund Stroke Imaging Group, led by Associate Professor Johan Wassélius.
The research environment is interdisciplinary and based on close collaboration between neurology and radiology, with a particular focus on the development and evaluation of diagnostic methods and clinical workflows in stroke care. The combined research groups include approximately ten doctoral students and offer a well-established infrastructure for doctoral education, supervision, research meetings, and seminars. The doctoral student will become part of an active and multidisciplinary research environment with access to experienced supervisors and regular seminar and research activities.
The Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund, is now announcing a PhD student position within the doctoral programme subject Medical Science – Neuroscience, linked to the doctoral project “Incidence, Treatment, Radiological and Organisational Aspects of Acute Ischaemic Stroke with Large Vessel Occlusion”. The position is based at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, and is conducted within an international and interdisciplinary environment.

As a PhD student, your primary task will be to pursue doctoral studies through independent research under supervision within the project “Incidence, Treatment, Radiological and Organisational Aspects of Acute Ischaemic Stroke with Large Vessel Occlusion”. The research focuses on the organisation of stroke healthcare, as well as improved diagnostics and clinical workflow in acute ischaemic stroke. The project will be conducted through a series of clinical research studies and is closely linked to highly specialised stroke care and neurointerventional services.
The PhD student will analyze and process large research datasets, interpret and evaluate scientific results, and contribute to the writing and publication of scientific manuscripts as part of the doctoral education. The position also provides opportunities to actively participate in national and international scientific conferences and to present research findings.
Within the PhD programme, the doctoral student will have the opportunity to complete all mandatory doctoral courses as well as relevant advanced courses within the subject area and in scientific methodology. This will provide excellent opportunities to develop both subject-specific expertise and methodological competence, as well as independence in scientific work.
The PhD's main task is to undertake doctoral education through independent research under supervision within the project “Incidence, Treatment, Radiological and Organisational Aspects of Acute Ischaemic Stroke with Large Vessel Occlusion”. The doctoral student will analyse and process large amounts of research data, interpret and evaluate findings, and contribute to the preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts.
For employment as a doctoral student, the applicant must have:
- A medical degree or another relevant academic qualification in medicine or a related biomedical field, alternatively be enrolled in a medical degree programme.
- Excellent command of Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
- Good knowledge of data analysis and statistics, including experience working with large datasets.
- The ability, under supervision, to structure, process and analyse research data and to document and present scientific findings.
- A meticulous, analytical, and responsible approach to work.
The following qualifications are considered advantageous:
- Completed courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, or equivalent.
- Education or experience in medicine with a focus on neurology, neuroradiology, or stroke.
- Research experience, particularly in clinical and registry-based research.
- Experience working with quality registries and large-scale datasets (big data).
- Experience in statistical analysis and the use of relevant statistical software.
- Experience in medical imaging and basic assessment of brain computed tomography (CT) scans.
- Strong personal qualities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a research group.
Applicants must fulfil the general eligibility requirements for doctoral education, meaning: a second-cycle qualification (Master's degree or equivalent), or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at second-cycle level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another way.

The employment is a fixed-term full-time position as a PhD student for four years (48 months), in accordance with Chapter 5, Section 7 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. The planned starting date is 1 November 2026, or as otherwise agreed.
