Neuroscience PhD position (4-year funded)
About this role
The position: We are accepting applications for a 4-year predoctoral position (PhD student) to investigate the properties of human circuits using surgical brain tissue samples. The selected candidate will apply either advanced imaging or patch-clamp electrophysiology techniques directly to surgically resected human brain tissue, working to understand how human neural circuits function and how they are altered in epilepsy patients. This position is funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI FPI position).
The team: We are a new research team at Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) supervised by Jake Watson. We work closely with the Hospital del Mar Epilepsy and Neurosurgery Units to link circuit properties to patient disease. HMRIB is based in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).
Requirements: How to apply: Applications will be continuously reviewed until 1 November 2026.
– Master’s degree in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or equivalent
– Prior experience in molecular or cellular biology
– Excellent English language skills
– Prior experience with image analysis or patch-clamp electrophysiology is highly valued
