Senior Scientist I

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist I at AbbVie's Lake County, Illinois location to join our growing cancer research organization. The scientist will join a team focused on discovering and validating novel cancer targets, driving discovery programs, and leading laboratory-based initiatives. They will propose, develop, and optimize innovative methods, act as the lead in their area of expertise, and critically assess scientific and regulatory developments to integrate into research and development efforts.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement novel functional genomics and cell-based high-throughput technologies (pooled and arrayed).
• Develop and optimize high-throughput, reproducible NGS workflows for the sensitive deconvolution and quantification of pooled cellular assays.
• Lead and conduct scientific research of early-stage discovery programs.
• Resolve key project hurdles with available information from literature and internal experts.
• Possess excellent skills in scientific writing for internal reports, external presentations, and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Analyze, integrate, and interpret large-scale, high-dimensional datasets to drive strategic research decisions.
• May mentor/supervise scientists and evaluate their performance.

  Qualifications:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics/Genomics, Pharmacology, Oncology or a related field, with typically 0+ (PHD), 8+ (MS), or 10+ (BS) years post-graduate experience. Experience must be in cell/molecular biology, oncogenic pathways, cell death signaling, and/or translational research in Oncology.
  • Extensive experience in NGS workflow implementation, cell engineering, oncology, drug discovery, and/or translational research is preferred.
  • Impactful research experience as demonstrated by track record of publications, patents and/or scientific accomplishments is essential, as is the ability to engage internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research.
  • Proficiency in coding (e.g. R, python, etc.) and advanced data analysis techniques, including computational tools and statistical methods, to handle complex, high-dimensional scientific datasets.
  • Experience generating and troubleshooting pooled cell line NGS assays (e.g., 384-well format)
  • Experience in building workflows with external CROs.
  • Hands-on experience with CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing using RNPs (and other equivalent approaches) to generate edited clonal cell lines and cell pools, including gene knockouts, knock-ins, point mutations, and fluorescent tagging.
  • Experience implementing high-throughput pooled cell line assays and perturbations to generate expansive, information-rich datasets.
  • Experience preparing large-scale sample sets for NGS using automated robotic workstations, gel electrophoresis, and amplicon PCR, along with Python-based analysis of gene editing outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior scientists in technical lab skills, data organization, work efficiency, and scheduling.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across diverse disciplinary environments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.

    The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
