Summary
Skeletal muscle is not only the main motor organ, but also plays a vital role in secreting factors regulating systematic metabolism and aging. It has become an area of interest for new solutions to address metabolic diseases and aging associated muscle dysfunction. In this study, we proposed a new method of subcutaneous transplantation of synthetic and regenerated autologous myocytes to overcome natural physical limitations and increase latent exercise capacity. Engineered myografts exhibited mature, vascularized structures that contract continuously in the body and effectively transport therapeutic proteins. Our results suggest that whole-body muscle mass and functions are enhanced, and both metabolic and regenerative outcomes are improved in aging and obesity mouse models.
