Summary
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a commonly used stimulant that induces an innate immune response, and serves as a model for studying inflammatory responses. Alternative splicing is key to gene expression and cell function, and is a key layer of gene regulation during disease progression and stress response. Although alternative splicing has been identified to play a role in response to LPS stimulation, a transcriptome wide ex vivo characterization of bulk PBMCs is lacking. Given the role of alternative splicing in the immune response is largely unexplored, understanding the role alternative splicing in the immune response can improve our understanding of gene regulatory processes and identify targets for treatment. The purpose of this study, using deep sequencing, is to evaluate for differential gene expression and alternative splicing associated with LPS treatment in human PBMCs.
