Summary
Despite developing cardiac atrophy and experiencing insufficient blood circulation in a microgravity environment, astronauts on long-term spaceflights did not exhibit significant cardiac dysfunction that may be due to the heart's unique robustness to withstand the space environment. However, the cardiac molecules associated with the robustness have not yet been identified. Here, we performed cardiac gene expression profiling using RNA sequencing to identify changes in gene expression in the hearts of mice housed on Earth and on the International Space Station under 1/6 g lunar gravity conditions for over 3 weeks.
