Summary
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, pathologically characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons and abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn). Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a unique class of stable closed-loop RNA molecules that exert biological functions via molecular sponging, transcriptional regulation, peptide translation, and other mechanisms. Accumulating studies have demonstrated that circRNAs are differentially expressed between PD patients and healthy controls; however, their precise mechanistic roles in PD pathogenesis remain incompletely understood. Therefore, in-depth investigation of the functions and regulatory mechanisms of circRNAs in PD is critical for elucidating disease etiology and identifying novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
