Summary
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and statins are the primary therapy for lowering LDL cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular risk. In addition to inhibiting cholesterol synthesis, statins reduce the production of geranylgeranyl isoprenoids, which regulate the activity of small GTPases such as Rap1a. To identify hepatic genes and pathways regulated by geranylgeranyl isoprenoids, we performed RNA sequencing of liver samples from mice treated with vehicle, statin, geranylgeraniol (GGOH), or statin plus GGOH. This dataset was generated to identify transcriptional programs regulated by geranylgeranyl isoprenoids and to discover candidate genes involved in hepatic cholesterol metabolism and PCSK9 regulation.
